Cannabidiol and Domestic Animals
The positive activities of cannabidiol can also be detected in animals (pet or bred for work or for human consumption)
In the body and brain of many vertebrates, the presence of cannabidiol receptors has been demonstrated. Thus, its many positive activities, for human health, can also be found in animals, both companion and bred for work or for human nutrition (Silver, 2019).
Moreover, considering the high antimicrobial activity of CBD, it could contribute to the substitution of synthetic antibiotics, used, today, systematically, in the breeding of meat animals. In addition to this, the intake of cannabidiol by farm animals could, together with other necessary measures, improve the welfare and, therefore, the quality of mental life of the animals. For these reasons this objective is part of the ethical and ecological vision of Herbal Neurocare, which is committed to promoting the welfare of animals, as well as humans.
In this section we will talk about cannabidiol and its usefulness in veterinary medicine and in the welfare of PETS and animals generally closer to humans such as dogs, cats, horses and also pet birds such as parrots.
Firstly, the indications, already well documented in the scientific literature for CBD, are, in Veterinary Medicine, those concerning the clinical problems mentioned below (Della Rocca, Di Salvo, 2020).
- Anxiety, excessive aggression and restlessness
- Nausea and lack of appetite
- Inflammation, especially of the joints
- Premature and dysfunctional aging
CANNABIDIOL in Veterinary Medicine is better tolerated than benzodiazepines and therefore particularly recommended for DOGS and CATS.
In dogs, benzodiazepines can cause paradoxical reactions, with activation or increased aggression.
In cats, benzodiazepines are not well tolerated, in fact they are not effectively metabolized by the feline liver.
CBD, in Veterinary Medicine, for dogs and cats, has proven to be very handy and well tolerated.
Moreover, dosages of cannabidiol, to be used, are 5 mg per day for small dogs, 10 mg per day for medium-sized dogs and 20 milligrams for large dogs.
Further for cats, an average of 5 mg per day may be used.
Cannabidiol is the treatment of choice to counteract joint pain and also stabilize the emotions of HORSES.
Horses are animals prone to leg trauma and, therefore, easily victims of joint pain. For them, CBD, due to its excellent tolerability profile, becomes an optimal treatment. Especially the dosages, described in the scientific literature, to be used for horses, are important, considering the size of the animal.
In fact, a horse, weighing between 500 kg and 1000 kg, would need 50 mg of CBD per day, administered in a single dose or divided into two daily intakes, spaced a few hours apart.
Besides in horses, very often fearful and anxious animals, the administration of CBD helps to stabilize emotions and mood and make the animal more docile, serene and collaborative.
In addition, Cannabidiol achieves excellent therapeutic results on rodents, with an extremely low dosage.
Since the mouse and the rat are the most used animals for pharmacological research, a great deal of positive data on the use of cannabidiol in rodent species is available.
Moreover, If the rodent is a PET, we will mainly refer to rabbits and hamsters that can be profitably treated with CBD, achieving excellent results, both therapeutic and for daily wellness. Particularly, just a few milligrams a day, administered at once.
The suffering of elderly parrots in captivity is alleviated by cannabidiol.
CBD is also very useful in captive parrots. In fact, these birds, seen their longevity, often complain, during their prolonged senescence, joint problems with pain and general suffering.
For an elderly parrot, weighing 300 or 500 grams, a couple of mgs of CBD per day may be enough.
NegEnt has been also successfully tested in veterinary medicine for effectiveness and tolerability.
In addition, its high bioavailability, both through the buccal mucosa, and through the digestive system, makes it easy to administer.
In other words, it is sufficient to lay one or more drops of NegEnt in the mouth (or in the beak, if we talk about parrots or other birds) and the game is done, as the absorption is immediate and complete!
Dogs, for example, can be given with little milk, offered in a small bowl, according to the long experience accumulated by Prof. Tullio Scrimali with his own four-legged friends.
For example, for a large dog, dilute 2 drops of NegEnt in 50 ml of milk (one drop if the dog is small) and offer the preparation to your four-legged friend: it will clean the bottom of the container and lick, literally, the mustache!
